What inspired you to start your own business, and what challenges did you face in the initial stages of entrepreneurship?
I started my business when I was on maternity leave from my microbiology job. I knew I didn’t have any childcare that would fit around my working hours, and I did not want to leave my little one. I had always dreamed of starting a wedding stationery business and this was the push that I needed to do it.
How do you maintain a work-life balance while running a successful business?
I am not so sure there is such a thing! BUT I do try to stick to my working hours as much as I can and keep the weekends free to spend time with my family. It’s not always possible but setting boundaries and sticking within them does really help.
Can you share a significant milestone or achievement that you are particularly proud of in your entrepreneurial journey?
As I have built my business alongside having babies it has been a slow burn but one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am so proud that I have managed to be there for both my kids (and continue to) each step of the way whilst following my dreams. I hope it inspires them to do the same.
Have you experienced any gender-related obstacles or biases since starting your own business?
I think people tend to view my business as more of a hobby. When exhibiting at wedding shows I get asked if I do this ‘in my spare time’ and although for some wedding stationers that can be true, this is my full-time business and a source of income for my family. I am a bit better at sticking up for my business now I am seven years in!
How do you empower and support other women in business?
I have always been a huge believer in community over competition. There are so many amazing fellow wedding stationers and other women in business who just get it! It’s so important to have a community of like-minded women in your circle as it only makes us stronger and better together.
How have you found marketing your business – has it been easy for you, or have you found it quite difficult?
Marketing is something which I have struggled with in my business but now I have found my design style and I am creating products and running my business in a way that very much aligns with my values it had just clicked. A lot of my traffic comes from Pinterest which is amazing as I use that platform in my personal life too. Finding ways to market your business that feels intuitive, and fun is the most important to me.
What are your main marketing activities, and what do you find works best for you?
I do love social media, especially Pinterest and Instagram where it is a very visual platform. I have been back doing wedding shows as well which is super fun speaking to all the lovely couples and getting real-time feedback on my designs. That has been super valuable.
Can you discuss a time when you had to pivot or adapt your business strategy?
Many artists will say the line ‘you have to find your own unique style’ and that is so true. When I first started, actually even a year ago, I would create designs that didn’t really fit with my aesthetic or felt aligned with me. It seemed like a terrible thing to do to turn down business! But when you become more authentically yourself in all parts of business it clicks so much easier and it’s much more enjoyable. I try to only take on projects that I am truly excited about, and I can pour my whole heart into designing my couples’ dream stationery.
Looking ahead, what are your future goals and aspirations for your business?
My ultimate goal for Indy Bee Crafts is to be recognised as a trusted expert in my field, known for delivering high-quality, handcrafted pieces that truly stand out as one of a kind. I want to further establish my reputation for exceptional quality and creativity, becoming a go-to resource for clients who value unique and meaningful designs.
A key aspiration is to focus more on creating bespoke and custom pieces that are tailored to each client’s individual story, style, and vision.
Additionally, I’m passionate about growing Indy Bee Crafts within the wider wedding community. Weddings are such a collaborative industry, and I want to connect with other vendors, build strong partnerships, and become an integral part of this creative network. Whether it’s through participating in styled shoots, attending wedding fairs, or contributing to industry events, I want Indy Bee Crafts to be recognised as a valued contributor within this space.
Ultimately, my vision is to combine artistry, collaboration, and exceptional client service to build a thriving business that not only brings joy to my clients but also inspires others in the wedding community.
